Introduction to Scuba Diving

With TWO Course Directors for both IDEA Canada and NAUI,
Groundhog Divers can offer in-house training from basic Openwater
through to the Instructor level.
All Courses offered by Groundhog Divers are IDEA Canada and NAUI.

Experience Scuba
FREE

Never tried SCUBA? Scuba experiences are scheduled at various pool locations throughout southern Ontario. Just bring your bathing suit, T-shirt and thick socks. Scuba experiences are available at the Kitchener shop's on-site pool once a month. Call your local shop for times and locations.
Open Water Certification This course will provide entry level scuba divers with an introduction to the basic skills and general knowledge needed to safely gain experience in the diving environment. The course contains both 6 classroom and 6 in-pool sessions. Candidates must be a minimum of 12 years old. Parental consent is required for minor children. Also, because of the large number of Instructors and Certified Assistants on staff, we can offer personalized attention, allowing all students to learn at their own speed.
We boast a ratio of 1 staff for every 2 students!

  • Weight belt with 6 to 9 lbs of coated lead

If you need to purchase any of this equipment, discuss the selection of the appropriate gear with the instructor beforehand.(Package and family discounts available).

All other equipment and supplies needed are supplied at no additional cost to the student.

Five open water dives with the instructor are required for scuba certification. Most diver trainees attend an "Open Water Weekend" in Tobermory, Colpoys Bay or Lake Huron and complete their certification requirements in two days while exploring the famous shipwrecks in the area.

The open water dives can also be completed during the week under special arrangements with our instructor. Arrangements can also be made to complete your Certification in one of our travel destinations.
Advanced Open Water Training The Advanced Open Water Diver course is intended to provide the student with a safe and structured apporach to gain additional experience and confidence to continue safe diving proctices. This course may be taken by a Certified Open Water Diver who has logged approximately 15 dives.

To become certified as an Advanced Open Water Diver, students must successfully complete the following:
  • Snorkel swim (400 yds)
  • Night Dive
  • Deep Dive
  • Underwater Navigation
  • 2 elective dives

In addition to exposure apparel, tanks, BC and regulator, each student must be equipped with a compass, dive light and cylume during the open water training. A back up light is recommended.

Scuba Rescue II Course Our toughest and most challenging course offered. For those wishing to become staff members, this is the first step. Pre-requisites: advanced certification, current First-Aid and CPR. DAN 02 training recommended.
Leadership Courses Leadership courses include; Divemaster, Assistant Instructor and Instructor.

Equipment Repair Course Open to all certified divers. Learn to better understand your equipment and complete minor repairs in order to save a dive. This is NOT a technican's course.
Ice Diving Course Open to all Advanced open water divers. Discover the beauty and serenity under the ice. This 2-1/2 day program teaches the techniques and safety precautions required to enjoy this wintertime activity. (Ice dependant).
Handicapped Scuba Buddy Program Leadership program in adapted SCUBA techniques and procedures. Open to all certified divers. Come learn how you can assist a disabled diver to have full access to recreational diving activities.
DAN Oxygen Provider Course This 4-1/2 hour course is designed to teach divers and non-divers to recognize possible dive related injuries and teaches the skills necessary to provide emergency oxygen first aid. Participants must have current CPR. Minimum 6 students per class. Pre-registration required. 2 year expiry. Check your cards and register early.
St. John Ambulance
First Aid & CPR
Recommended training for all divers and non-divers. Annual CPR re-certification also available at this course. St John First Aid is a 3 year expiry. (check your cards).
